A new era in teaching achieves 100% pass rate for Registered Dental Nurses

The oral health improvement team provides support to all NHS contracted general dental practices to enable the teams to deliver prevention advice and preventative clinical treatments to their patients to improve their oral health. To increase knowledge and develop skill mix within the dental practice we decided to deliver the Primary Care Commissioning accredited course for Registered Dental Nurses (RDNs) entitled ‘Making Prevention Work in Practice’. In September 2013 with funding provided by the Northwest Deanery and in partnership with Archway Dental Practice and VSM Healthcare eleven students from eight general dental practices and community clinics throughout Manchester  enrolled on the course and began their learning journey.

The 12 week course consisted of teaching sessions, both theory and practical, with a specialised teaching session with the students and mentors focusing on the support needed by the RDNs. The students were then able to practise their newly acquired skills in practice with patients, give them tailored evidence based oral health advice and apply prescribed fluoride varnish. Fitness to practise was continually assessed by the work place mentors and course tutors, who gave continual support throughout the course and beyond. The course concluded with each student undertaking verbal, practical and case note assessments.  Students were required to pass all elements to receive their awards.

The students worked extremely hard and the Oral Health Improvement Team are thrilled to report a 100% pass rate. The tutors are delighted with their progress and are very proud of all the newly qualified ‘Extended Duties’ Registered Dental Nurses.
